Job Summary:
The Pharmacy Intern is an entry-level position designed to develop a pharmacy student's knowledge base and competency level while performing essential pharmacy functions under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The intern will be involved in a wide variety of technical and clinical duties, including drug preparation, distribution, patient care, and medication counseling. The role is essential in supporting the hospital's unit-dose drug distribution system, intravenous admixture program, and overall pharmacy operations, ensuring that all activities are compliant with departmental policies and regulatory standards
Responsibilities:
Clinical Support:
- Prepare, compound, and label IV admixtures, including antibiotics, cardiac drips, parenteral nutrition, and chemotherapy, under the supervision of a pharmacist
- Participate in interdisciplinary patient care rounds
- Conduct medication history interviews and provide patient education on medication use, including first-dose teaching and discharge counseling
- Monitor medication therapies, including pharmacokinetic monitoring, and assist in the development of therapeutic plans
- Provide drug information to healthcare providers and assist in the reporting of adverse drug reactions
- Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations regarding medication use
Operational Support:
- Procure, distribute, and manage ordered medications as per physician or pharmacist request
- Maintain accurate records of controlled substances and ensure proper documentation for investigational drugs
- Conduct monthly inspections of nursing stations, manage medication inventory, and remove expired medications
- Assist with the preparation of routine patient orders, including compounding, repackaging, and stocking of pharmaceuticals
- Maintain the pharmacy's operational environment, ensuring cleanliness, organization, and safety
- Utilize automated dispensing units and support pharmacy inventory management
- Participate in continuous performance improvement and regulatory compliance efforts
Customer Service:
- Provide information to patients regarding medication pricing, insurance, and pharmacy policies
- Handle phone calls from patients, family members, and healthcare team members
Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience:
- Previous pharmacy work experience (Preferred)
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and respond to changes in workload
Education:
- Currently enrolled in an accredited School of Pharmacy (Required)
- Minimum of 2 years of Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum completed (Preferred)
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid New York State Pharmacy Intern Permit required (Required)
