Job Summary
To provide quality pharmaceutical care defined as being responsible for assuring the provision of safe, efficacious, and cost-effective drug therapy and investigational drug service support for Geisinger patients. The pharmacist will provide this care through clinical pharmacy activities and through the management of the Investigational Drug Service.
Job Duties
- Advises, assists, and supervises the work of pharmacy technicians; assumes final responsibility for the accuracy of their work.
- Provides input to management team on equipment and supplies for the annual budget.
- Receives copies of investigational drug study protocols.
- Reviews documents and determines pharmaceutical materials and professional services required to satisfy the study description.
- Prepares itemized budgets for pharmacy services for clinical trials.
- Generates monthly billing report for clinical trials supported by the Investigational Drug Service.
- Maintains a current knowledge base regarding regulatory issues and laws, and oversees the implementation of such regulation and laws affecting investigational drugs and clinical trials.
- Prepares investigational drug dispensing guidelines.
- Serves as a member on one of Geisinger's Institutional Review Boards.
- Serves as a liaison between Hematology and Oncology and pharmacy staff for clinical trials.
- Assists with the development of protocols.
- Performs annual performance evaluations of assigned personnel.
- Works with study sponsors, study monitors, investigators, study coordinators, and other Clinical Trials Office personnel to resolve problems involving pharmacy services.
- Assumes responsibility for the delivery of pharmaceutical care to the patient population covered by the pharmacist.
- Coordinates the use of human, material, and informational resources such that timely, efficient, cost effective, and appropriate care is consistently rendered.
- Receives and interprets physicians' medication orders and clarifies or corrects orders with the physician.
- Reviews patient medication profiles to guard against drug sensitivities, contraindications, duplications, and major drug interactions.
- Reviews all medication orders for prescribing, formulary, and therapeutic issues.
- Suggests appropriate formulary alternative(s) based on the patient's clinical parameters.
- Consults and advises members of the medical staff on matters relating to specific drug therapy problems and monitors and acts on patient laboratory results.
- Provides in-depth drug information and other informational materials to members of the medical, nursing, and other healthcare provider teams.
- Calculates drug dosages based on pharmacokinetic parameters.
- Prepares drug reviews for the System Therapeutics Formulary Steering Committee.
- Participates in pharmacy-related research, including the development of research design and protocol and proposal development.
- Enters orders proficiently into the pharmacy information system and notes appropriate information on the order copy needed by the pharmacy technician to fill the order.
- Prepares special medications involving compounding procedures and sterile products using aseptic technique.
- Conducts and Assists with routine inventories (perpetual, weekly and monthly) of investigational drugs stored in pharmacy areas.
- Assists in establishing and maintaining adequate and easily retrievable record keeping systems for protocols, study subjects, drug inventory, manufacturing, and dispensing investigational drugs.
- Establishes and maintains standards which assure the quality, proper storage, and safe use of investigational agents and related supplies.
- Ensures that paperwork is completed and retained, and that investigational and study drugs are handled according to the requirements of the sponsoring agencies.
- Coordinates the ordering and receipt of investigational drugs and supplies shipped to the pharmacy.
- Attends departmental educational programs.
- Maintains a current knowledge of technical and clinical practice changes affecting the scope of practice.
- Presents staff development programs for the departments in the health system.
- Provides in-services to other healthcare providers when requested and necessary.
